Joseph Margolis and Chris Skowroński at Berlin Pragmatist Kant Conference

Joseph Margolis is one of the main representatives of American pragmatism; he is the author of many books on relativism and historicism in aesthetics, culture and ethics. The photo was taken at Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin, on July 13 ,2017, just after Margolis’s lecture over there.

Santayana on Aesthetics

Santayana on Aesthetics. Santayana was one of the first to teach aesthetics at an American university (the1892-93 course at Harvard, The Sense of Beauty being one of the results). He devoted three books and many papers and chapters on aesthetic themes, yet all his studies served him to create his own position (to be described in Santayana Guide’s Part 10: Aesthetics, Arts, and Literary Figures). His views on aesthetics, as on philosophy in general, stem from his own elaborated system of thought that combines the elements of naturalism, individualism, pragmatism, and Platonism. It is predominantly by means of the categories of his own aesthetics that he provides us with his interpretations in this field as well as on the arts, aesthetic perception, work of art, criticism, on many artists and philosophies of art. Hence, it is difficult to separate Santayana’s views on aesthetics from looking at aesthetics from his own perspective. Interestingly, Santayana was specific on having adumbrated, at least thematically, most of his plots before he developed them in his numerous publications (cf. Ahmore 1966, 25). His thoughts and ideas were implemented also in his own art, which is poetry, literature (he wrote two best-sellers), and criticism.

Trozos de Pensamientos desde Alcalá de Henares

¿Cuál es el sentido de practicar filosofía hoy en día? ¿Y las humanidades en general? Mirando por la ventana de mi habitación en Residencia San Ildefonso – la foto arriba –  al Patio de Filósofos del antiguo edificio de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (estoy aquí de nuevo enseñando dentro del programa Erasmus plus) pensé, utilizando los critierios de la filosofía práctica, lo siguiente:

Según los pensadores del Renacimiento, las humanidades ayudan a la colaboración intercultural y a la mutua comprensión entre las tradiciones y culturas; parece que eso fue el ambiente intelectual que ocurrió a solamente unos metros de mi lugar, el Patio Trilingüe, en el que, cuatrocientos años atrás, se encontraron, vivían y colaboraban los hablantes de tres idiomas (latín, griego y hebreo) para estudiar aquí.

Según los criterios de los pensadores de Ilustración, la educación humanística puede darnos mucha satisfación individual Y mucho beneficio social sin mucho riesgo y mínimas consequencias negativas.

Según los criterios económicos contemporáneos, el costo de las humanidades es incomparablemente más bajo que el de otras disciplinas. No se necesitan costosos edificios, ni laboratorios y ni experimentos, solo libros en las bibiotecas (casi siempre gratis) o textos en pdf (casi siempre gratis también); por supuesto, se necesitan también los lectores que tengan la habilidad de disfrutar de la sustancia de esos textos y de transmitir su sentido educativo y cultural durante el proceso del enseñar a los estudiantes y de promover la cultura. Parece que eso necesita más soporte institucional, y Erasmus sirve como un buen ejemplo para otras instituciones.
